After last week’s highly competitive opening game of the season, WIT Ladies 3 were ready to bounce back from a narrow defeat and claim their first win of the season. Unfortunately it was not meant to be! Being a player short (but not fearful!) proved problematic in the midfield area and we found ourselves a goal down within the first ten minutes. However, some fine play resulted in Iona Boyle scoring a goal for WIT just minutes later! WIT saw great spells of play with Nadine Yewdale showing her technical brilliance in the central midfield area before Grange managed to sneak in a goal just before half time. The WIT half time team talk noted that the midfield needed to work their socks off (being a player down) and support the defence as well as much as the attack as we were giving a lot of the ball away from free hits to Grange midfielders. Grange kept piling the pressure on us, expanding their game by using all available space on the pitch. After a heavy attack from Grange and some excellent saves by Fiona Kerr (our new, much appreciated goalie!) WIT got the break they needed and Nadine was working her way past Grange players – her skill rewarded with a fine goal from the left hand side of the penalty area. At things all even at 2-2, WIT started to get a bit more defensive, eager to not let the draw slip from grasp. However, with 10 minutes to go (and many bruises later from Grange shots) Grange scored a fantastic goal with electric fast pace from the top of the penalty area which slotted into the left hand corner of the goal. A little disappointing to lose in the last 10 minutes after a strong performance from WIT, the team should be proud of their effort against a Grange side who had 11 players and the support of their home fans from the sidelines. It shouldn’t be long now until our efforts are rewarded with a nice win!
The Ladies 3s got off to a flying start in their first game of the season, applying pressure early on against our opponents ESM. This pressure was rewarded when Nadine Yewdale showed some excellent skill to make way past many players to score the first goal of the game.
The midfield comprising of Ailie Childs, Hazel Burt, Anna Nelson and Caitlin Wallace were particularly spritely in the first half, feeding the ball to the strikers meaning that there were many opportunities to capitalise on our lead. The 3s then went on to dominate the first half, Nadine again scoring once more to put ourselves comfortably 2-0 up. However, ESM were clearly eager to make a way back into the match and just before half time managed to pull a goal back. At half time, it was noted that we were playing well and need to carry on this way so that we can win the game. However, ESM were determined to level things and managed to get another goal to make the game all even at 2-2. Suddenly, the pressure was all on us to reclaim the lead we worked hard for in the first half. It wasn’t meant to be as ESM got a lucky break and slotted in their third goal meaning we were now trailing 3-2.
This didn’t put off the team though, heads never went down and we were trying harder than ever to get back into the game. Inez Dodds was strong as ever dominating the defence area alongside Helen Gallogly, Rosslyn Cole and Megan Wallace. Anna Nelson provided us with the goal to get back into the game with an excellent, strong finish that slotted past ESM’s goalie! After the goal and with things at 3-3 it was very much end-to-end stuff, with both teams capable of sneaking a win. Unfortunately, ESM managed to score a penalty in the remaining 10 or so minutes meaning that time was running out for us, it didn’t stop the team however and Nadine Yewdale was particularly unlucky not to get a hat-trick in the closing minutes of the game.
All in all, an excellent start to the season and although we didn’t get any points for it from a League perspective, many positives can be taken from the game and built on. Looking forward to what seems like an exciting season ahead!
