Final Score: 4-4 (HT 3-2)
With the Men’s 2nd team on the back of a disappointing defeat at the hands of Western the day before and a Saturday night for some that ended early into Sunday morning, this was going to be a difficult game playing against an established GHK side.
However, the Men tore up the form book early in the first half after Martin Johnston converted the first short corner of the game. WIT dominated in the first 15 minutes of the game as GHK struggled to get to grips with a pressing WIT side, and this resulted in a second in close succession as Ian Chisholm tapped one in at the far post following some sustained pressure.
GHK retaliated immediately and punished WIT for pressing too high in the cruelest of goals seeing Ricky Allinson scoring into his own goal. With their tail up GHK quickly scored against the run of play from another breakaway and some poor tracking back from WIT.
A shot before half time from Paul Taylor put the visitors back in the driving seat but GHK were quickly gaining ground on a rapidly tiring WIT team with the half time whistle coming not a moment too soon.
The second half came and within the first 10 minutes saw the home side take the lead for the first time having lost a short corner then a PF. Sensing the changing tide, WIT pushed forward and took control of the game scoring again, this time Will Mackenzie scoring from the top of the D.
Despite a number of chances around the D, WIT failed to make the pressure count and while GHK only troubled the visitors goal a few time after that, both sides were now tiring greatly in the heat and a draw was inevitable.
Final Score: Draw 2-2 (HT 1-2)
Scorers: Andy Snelling (2)
WIT Man of the Match: Rick Allison
After a good performance against ESM resulting in a disappointing scoreline, WIT travelled to Stepps hoping to improve the results side of their season. Maybe it was the effect of a warming sun for the first time this year, but a remarkably open game of end-to-end hockey left the visitors wondering how on earth they left without all three points, although in truth any result was possible given the number of chances missed by both sides.
WIT started strongly and went close early on but the initial exchanges hinted at how the game would pan out, with space in the midfield allowing a fairly flowing attacking approach from both sides. Waverley eventually took the lead when a break from Alex Chisholm fed Lamb, who squared for Snelling to dive in and finish between the Stepps keeper’s pads. However, as has often been the case, WIT were not to hold onto the league for long, with two quick goals from Stepps in a period of domination from the home side that also saw chances missed and a couple of excellent saves from Allison. After the break, WIT regained control of the game and pushed hard for the equaliser, missing chance after chance. Luck did not appear to be on the side of the boys in blue, with several goal-line clearences from Stepps as well as a couple of sitters being missed. However, with around 10 minutes left WIT finally got the goal their dominace deserved, with Alex Chisholm beating the keeper and feeding Snelling to volley into the unguarded net. This was the catalyst to a frenzied end to the game, with both sides hitting the post as well as being guilty of further misses. In this case, difficult to say whether this was a point gained or two dropped, but another commited performance from WIT nonetheless.
