Super Sunday for Socks

We have Yellow Sox, Black Sox and now, thanks to the ingenious coordination of the Under 12′s the Awesome Sox! With most if not all of our Under 12′s sporting nothing short of a kaleidoscope of colour between their knees and feet in the first of the Under 12 tournaments to take place between now and Easter.

WIT played host to Cala, Watsonians, Dunfermline and Inverleith at Bangholm which saw Inverleith narrowly beat Dunfermline in the final match to claim the bragging rights until the next round meets at Inverleith in a few weeks time.

Our Under 12′s stood up well against Cala in their first game with a 0-0 result but Dunfermline proved to be a much tougher proposition, losing 5-0. In the game against Inverleith, it started to click into place and there were spells of great play, some which resulted in a goal. However it was too little too late as they lost 3-1. The final game saw Inverleith B take on WIT and again after a thrilling game, narrowly lost 2-0.

Still, they did have the best socks on the pitch and gave everything as they completed the days hockey for the club. Well done to Alex for umpiring all the games for WIT. Great effort!

Coffee and Cake

A frappucino and a cheeky cake are all that’s needed to help sooth the weary legs of the elite Under 14 athlete these days. That’s what awaited our Yellow and Black Sox as they battled at Meggetland in their first games of the New Year.

Both teams started well dusting off the Christmas excess with two goalless draws. The Yellow Sox faired well against recent entrants to group D, Firrhill HS soaking up a lot of pressure for the most of the game but looked the better side later on. The Black Sox had a number of chances to score but were thwarted by the ESM keeper.

The long break between games, the two bags of cheese rings and a game which consisted of keeping up a piece of small paper between the group seemed to ease the muscles before the second games which saw a reversal of fortune for the Black Sox as they went against a strong Watsonians Wasps side and lost 3-0. The Yellow Sox faired a lot better against Eskvale winning 4-1, goals coming from Nathan, Jack and Joe.

Both games had controversial decisions with goals being awarded or disallowed and both sides weren’t shy in venting their frustration! It didn’t last as both teams trapsed off for a well earned Sunday afternoon in a coffee shop. Frappucino anyone?

Yellow Sox show off Full Press Prowess

Only one of our Under 14 teams were in action this weekend playing two games against Dunfermline Carnegie and Linlithgow.

Both games were great to watch and it was really good to see the teamwork and attacking play at its best. At one point the Yellow Sox organised themselves into a Full Press with no-one in the team left out leaving no trace of an opening for the Dunfermline team to get out of. Shortly after this the only goal came from an impossible angle. Many more attempts were made but Dunfermline worked hard to stop any more goals from going in.

The hour gap between the first and second games took its toll on both Yellow Sox and Linlithgow as they played out a 0-0 draw with both sides coming close to scoring.

With tired legs, a win and a draw under their belt, the Yellow Sox went from Meggetland with smiles on their faces.

U14 Results – Sunday 9th October

The rain held off and 18 of our U14′s battled it out at Meggetland and produced some spirited performances from our U14 teams despite being unable to keep the sauce from running down the front of their tops (you know who you are!)

Yellow Sox
Yellow Sox played Linlithgow in their first game which ended goal-less. Both sides had goals disallowed (one for being outside the area and the other for a foot) and a draw was a fair result given the play. The Yellow Sox defence was resolute and composed as Linlithgow tried everything to score a goal.

At the other end WIT moved the ball around the defence really well and were equally frustrated by the way Linlitghow defended.

The second game against Fidra was a different affair and Fidra only equalised after a breakaway as Yellow Sox spent the vast majority of the game in the Fidra half. A goal came when India Reilly made a telling pass to Uma who passed to Joe for him to finish past the keeper. Many other chances came but WIT were unable to make them count.

A superb and very composed set of results.

Black Sox
The first game against Watsonians Wasps looked to be a very one-sided affair at the start with Black Sox scoring two goals in quick succession and looking hungry for more. However, Wasps kept calm and scored twice in the second part of the game to snatch a draw. Some great movement and fantastic support for each other as they went forward. In defence the tackling was very strong and helped build the attack again.

The second game, though, was a different affair and Livingston came out 4-1 winners despite a significant number of chances to score. The goal came from a free hit just outside the scoring area which was then put into the area to be cleared by a livingston player. But not far enough out of the area and it was clinically put in the back of the net by Alex to make it 3-1. It was a consolation goal and Livingston quickly returned the favour by scoring once more.

Some terrific play all round by both teams and it sets up some great games to come. Next games are on the 23rd October where Yellow Sox take on Watsonians Wizards and Black Sox have two games against Fidra and Watsonians Warriors.
